The 38-year-old actress had had many successful stage roles, breaking through in 2013 with her gravity-defying performance in Tori Amos’s musical The Light Princess at the National Theatre, and going on to star there again in As You Like It and The Threepenny Opera. This one, though, in which she became the first woman to take the lead role in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company, was the big one.'
